Artist Feature – Cameron Russell, Model and Wise Woman

Desktop65

There are so many TED talks I admire.  TED, by the way, is a “global set of conferences owned by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to disseminate ‘ideas worth spreading.’”  You can access many of the talks via Youtube HERE: TEDtalksDirector

The talk I want to share with my readers here at Existential Ella, is presented by Cameron Russell.  She’s a model, with over a decade of experience in the industry.  Cameron discusses the realities of the modeling industry in a clear, honest and inviting way in the video below.

What do you think about this video?

When looking at fashion spreads and advertising in magazines, on television, or pretty much anywhere you turn your head, think about how it was constructed, who is involved, and the message that is being sent.  Who created the ad, photo or video?  Why did they create it?  What are they trying to sell to you – because that’s usually what they are trying to do.

On the other end of that analysis, think about the individuals, and not the corporations, involved in the production of these works.  The model, photographer, designer, stylists, makeup artist.  All of these people come from different circumstances.  They each have their own specialty, passions and insecurities too.  Their work is their art, and what feeds them.

Most importantly, when it comes to the messages sent via these images, realize that what you look like is not what defines you.  Fashion models, and fashion photography, is not meant to set the bar for everyone else in regards to their outer appearance.

Advertising, and media, do try to manipulate our feelings, and make us think we need to purchase certain items to feel good about ourselves, but we have the choice to not accept this information into our lives OR to view these messages in a different way.  Be selective with what media you allow into your mind and heart.  Remember that every advertiser, company and individual has their own agenda, and it may not be in your best interest.

You are a powerful being.  You are a unique individual.  You have the right to be yourself, whoever that may be.  Are you a writer?  Do you like to play roller derby?  Are you good with animals?  Do you have a great smile?  Do you care for your family?  These things are important.  You are important.

Tiffe’s website will inspire you.  You can delve further into her collections sampled above, and check out the Reincarnation collection below (one of my FAVOURITES).

ON the Reincarnation collection:

“Fashion designer Tiffe Fermaint helps Buffalo Exchange promote recycled fashion by creating a unique collection of men’s and women’s apparel. These garments are created from thrift items gathered over a span of months. Using her signature design, Tiffe Fermaint ‘reincarnates’ used clothing into something spectacular. Blending 90’s punk themes and chic 80’s coolness, this collection displays Fermaint’s imagination and skill set.” Untitled

My dear readers and friends, You will surely want to “like” Tiffe’s Facebook page.  I am going to be calling upon your favourite clicking fingers at the end of February!!  I have the chance to win a contest, hosted by Mz. Etsy Shop of the Week – Karina Manarin

Desktop35

Art and fashion are one and the same!  Each of us has a chance to be an artist every day when we create our armor of texture and color.  Karina Manarin understands this concept on many levels.

Karina received her BFA in fibers from Arizona State University in 2007.  She is an artist in many mediums, and it shows in the techniques she utilizes to create one-of-a-kind pieces.

Black and Beige Shale Stone

These pieces are from Karina’s “Rock Collection,” aside from the scarf which was done with a Japanese technique called Shibori!  You MUST read her product descriptions.  These items are seriously magical, scientific, products of love!

Karina hand dyes everything, and utilizes inspiration from nature in her creative process.  She says about the Rock Collection, “I collected a few stones which reminded me of my childhood rock collection of pretty stones I found in the desert behind my house. I hope this project reflects the fun and joy of childhood rock collections!”
